Why it is worth doing
Queensland has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and our UV stays high all year, not just in summer. Most skin cancers are very treatable when they are found early. A full body skin check takes about half an hour, and it is one of the more worthwhile half hours you will spend on your health.

Even with nothing obvious to point at, regular checks matter if you are fair skinned, spend a lot of time outdoors, or have a personal or family history of skin cancer. Your doctor will tell you how often you should come back.
What happens at a skin check
We talk through your history
Sun exposure, any previous skin cancers, family history, and anything you have spotted yourself.
A head to toe examination
Your doctor checks your skin using a dermatoscope, a handheld magnifier that shows what is happening beneath the surface of a spot and picks up changes the naked eye misses.
Anything suspicious gets discussed there and then
You will not be left wondering. The usual options are keeping an eye on it, taking a biopsy, or removing it.
Treatment happens here
If something needs to come off, that can usually be done on site rather than sending you somewhere new. And because this is a full general practice, the doctor who finds it can look after your follow up too.
Plenty of people put a skin check off because it feels a bit awkward. The examination is thorough but respectful, and you can choose a male or female doctor when you book.

Trained in skin cancer medicine with the Skin Cancer College Australasia, with more than ten years in skin cancer medicine and thousands of skin cancers diagnosed and managed. Studied biomedical science and medicine at the University of Queensland.
Dr Colin McTari
MD, FRACGP
Substantial experience in skin cancer medicine and skin surgery, built over more than seventeen years in practice, including seven years training across Princess Alexandra, Mater and Queen Elizabeth II hospitals.
Dr Patricia Porras Rodriguez
MBBS, FRACGP, DCH
Skin checks and skin procedures, alongside a strong interest in women's health, paediatrics and chronic disease. Consultations also available in Spanish.
What it costs
Oxford Street Medical Centre is a private billing practice. Fees are payable at the time of your appointment. The Medicare rebate depends on the length and type of your consultation, so a longer appointment gives you more back. Biopsies, excisions and other procedures are charged separately and your doctor will talk you through the cost before anything goes ahead.
